About Asbestos

Many products were manufactured using asbestos and were commonly used in appliances, building materials, as a fireproof barrier and in insulation.

How Harmful is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a Carcinogen. The prolonged inhalation of harmful asbestos fibres can cause serious illnesses including malignant lung cancer, mesothelioma (one of the rarest cancers affecting the lining of lungs, abdomen and the heart) and asbestosis (which affects the tissue in the lungs.)

Asbestos is known to be responsible for at least 4,000 deaths in the UK each year. The European Union has banned all use of asbestos and extraction, manufacture and processing of asbestos products. The first bans took place in 1985 with the last one, white asbestos (Chrysotile from the serpentine group), being banned as late as end of 1999.
